National Wrestling Hall of Fame

For wrestling fans from around the world, Waterloo’s National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is a pilgrimage destination. This non-profit institution tells a compelling story, even if you’re not well-versed in the sport. In March 2019, the museum re-opened after a $1.4 million renovation, making this a great time to visit.

The museum is named after wrestling legend Dan Gable, a 1972 Olympic gold medalist, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest amateur wrestlers in the history of the sport. The Waterloo native went on to become a coach at the University of Iowa, where he won 15 NCAA National Wrestling Team Titles.

Tour the museum to learn about Gable’s life and his fierce commitment to excellence that shaped generations of athletes. Other exhibits describe the history of wrestling going back to the ancient Greeks and its diverse identity today, from Olympic and collegiate teams to professional wrestling.
