NWHOF Massachusetts Chapter: Marisol Nugent wins Junior National Championship

The Massachusetts Chapter recognizes Marisol Nugent for winning the 65 kg title at the UWW Women’s Junior Nationals and taking 6th in the U23 division. Nugent avenged a prior loss to Victoria Torres in the semis and won by technical fall in the Junior finals. Nugent made the semis of U23 before injury defaulting to 6th place.

Nugent, wrestling for the Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club, lives in Boxford, MA and attended high school at Philips Andover where she was co-captain of the coed team and captured both New England and National Prep titles, each of the tournament’s inaugural girls’ divisions. Nugent was the recipient of the Massachusetts Chapter's 2020 Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award and the James C Peckham Scholarship.

Nugent is Massachusetts’ most decorated female wrestler and the State’s first Junior National Champion. Despite losing a year of high school competition to ACL reconstruction, Nugent is now a 8 time All-American, including a 2018 Super 32 Tournament National title.

Massachusetts Chapter President, Sean Harrington, said: "All of us at the NWHOF-MC and the Massachusetts Wrestling community are so proud of Marisol Nugent. She excels on the mat, in the classroom and has been a great ambassador for wrestling in our State. Being a recipient of both of our NWHOF-MC Tricia Saunders High School Excellence Award and the James C Peckham Scholarship, shows the amazing path has been taking. With her recent success, she is blazing a new path. Marisol is the first female Jr National Champion and U23 All American from Massachusetts. Now that she is attending Lehigh, and competing out of the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club, her potential for the highest level success is even more tangible. Marisol, and girls like her, are leading the way all across this country for so many more girls to follow. It is no surprise to us in the MA Chapter that she is taking this next step and excelling at the National level."

Nugent is a Freshman at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA where she trains with coaching legend Jeff Buxton at the LVWC regional training center. The win qualifies Nugent for the 2021 Junior and Senior World Team Trials as well as the USOC's last chance qualifier.
