Cowboy Career

Arguably the greatest amateur wrestler in the history of the sport, collegiality and internationally, John Smith is the first American to win four world level titles. Smith won the 1987, 1989, and 1990 Freestyle World Championships and his forth world title is the 1988 Olympic Gold Medal, which he won in the Seoul games. In taking the 1990 World title, Smith was named “Master of Technique” an honor designating the world’s best technical wrestler. The Del City, Okla., native was awarded the 1990 Sullivan Award, which recognizes the nation’s outstanding amateur athlete, after being a finalist on three other occasions.
