2025 U20 World silver medalist William Henckel and 2025 U20 World bronze medalist Connor Mirasola headline the U23 men’s freestyle field at the 2026 U23 Nationals & U20 World Team Trials at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio.
Competition in the U23 men’s freestyle division begins on Saturday, May 30, and concludes on Sunday, May 31. Champions will be decided Sunday in best-of-three finals.
Champions in each weight class will be well-positioned to represent the U.S. at the 2026 U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, October 12-18. The U23 World Team spot goes to the U23 Nationals champion unless a higher-ranking age-group eligible Senior National Team member elects to take the roster spot.
Wrestlers to Watch
Henckel will compete in the 79 kg bracket after earning a silver medal at the 2025 U20 World Championships and gold at last year’s Pan American Championships. He placed fifth at the 2026 U.S. Open and is seeking his first U23 national title this weekend.
Mirasola will compete at 125 kg after earning bronze at 92 kg at the 2025 U20 World Championships. A two-time U20 World Team member, he also wrestled at last year’s U23 Pan American Championships, where he claimed gold.
At 61 kg, returning champion Nic Bouzakis is chasing his third straight U23 Nationals title. A two-time age-group World Team member, he owns a 2023 U20 World bronze medal and back-to-back U20 Pan American titles from 2022 and 2023.
Bennett Berge (86 kg) enters the weekend as a two-time U20 World medalist, with a bronze in 2023 and a silver in 2022. While he has competed at this event previously, this will be his first appearance in the U23 division.
2023 U20 World Championships bronze medalists Matthew Singleton and Camden McDanel will compete this weekend in the 79 kg and 97 kg brackets, respectively. Singleton enters with the second-highest PIN rating in his weight class, while McDanel owns the top PIN rating at 97 kg.
Former U23 World Team members add further depth to the field, including heavyweight contenders Lucas Stoddard and Daniel Herrera at 125 kg, along with Max Gallagher at 57 kg and Garavous Kouekabakilaho at 97 kg. Stoddard and Gallagher were teammates on the 2024 U23 World roster. Herrera and Kouekabakilaho were U23 World Team members in 2025 and return as defending champions from last year’s event.
Weight Classes to Watch
70 kg
The U23 men’s freestyle division boasts more than 1,000 registrations across all weight classes. Within the 70 kg, over 150 athletes are registered, making it the deepest field of the tournament. Jordan Williams enters with the highest PIN rating in the bracket and will look to capture the title after a fourth-place finish at the Senior World Team Trials earlier this month.
79 kg
The 79 kg bracket is expected to be one of the most competitive weights, with U20 World medalists Henckel and Singleton joined by Hunter Garvin and Daschle Lamer among the top four in PIN ratings. Garvin owns three U23 Pan American Championships medals and made a 2024 World Championships appearance in Greco-Roman over the past two years. Lamer comes in after winning a 174-pound title for Oregon State at this year’s Pac-12 Championships.
125 kg
The 125 kg bracket is another loaded division to follow throughout the weekend. Mirasola and Koy Hopke will step onto the mat with the highest PIN ratings in the weight class, but the title will not come easily for either, with Aden Attao, Herrera, Jacob Levy and Stoddard also in contention.
How to Follow
Action in Geneva begins on Friday with U20 men’s freestyle and U23 Greco-Roman. The U23 men’s freestyle division begins with preliminary competition on Saturday before concluding on Sunday.

PIN Ratings
The top 10 wrestlers in each weight class based on USA Wrestling men’s freestyle PIN ratings are listed below. PIN ratings are not seeds, and separation for each bracket will not be final until after weigh-ins and are subject to change based on final entries.
To be eligible for separation at a USA Wrestling regional or national event, athletes must hold a minimum style-specific PIN rating of 1100. USA Wrestling will separate up to 50 percent of a bracket.
USA Wrestling’s Performance Index, abbreviated as PIN, is used to separate top athletes at regional and national events. Each wrestler earns a PIN rating based on results over time.
PIN ratings and entrants are listed as of May 28.
