U.S. Women’s Freestyle Wins Eight Gold Medals at U17 Pan American Championships

PANAMA CITY, Panama – Team USA’s women’s freestyle team won eight gold medals at the 2026 U17 Pan American Championships at Centro de Alto Rendimiento Luis Tejada. Four of the U.S. gold medals came via pin, and Team USA finished with a medal in each of the 10 weight classes.
In the team standings, the U.S. finished with a tournament-best 235 points. Mexico finished second with 170 points and Canada was third with 133 points.

In round robin action, Sophia Valdez and Matilda Hruby bonused their way through the tournament and capped off the day with pins in their final bouts of the night. At 40 kg, Valdez finished with a pair of technical falls and two pins. Hruby pinned each of her opponents at 69 kg.
At 53 kg, Aubree Gutierrez pinned her championship foe just 38 seconds into the match. Aleia Apostol also won her gold medal in less than a minute after pinning Canada’s Gurleen Dhillon 55 seconds into the title contest at 57 kg.
The pair of Hailey Delgado (49 kg) and Landri Von Gonten (61 kg) shutout their opponents in the medal round to secure their gold medals by 10-0 technical falls. Delgado won the Golden Boot, given to the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. She did not surrender a point throughout and won all four bouts 10-0.
In an intense battle at 65 kg, Eve Skrocki fell behind early but rallied and edged out Yolanyi Rosado Valerio of the Dominican Republic, 9-8.
Alexis Penley capped off Team USA’s gold medalists after winning a 4-2 decision at 73 kg.
At 43 kg, Abigail Peterson finished with silver after being pinned in her championship battle.
Olivia Hernandez rebounded after dropping her semifinal match at 46 kg and pinned Talia Pavlic of Canada to win bronze.

The 2026 U17 Pan American Championships continue Saturday with Greco-Roman starting at 10 a.m. local time. Finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. Panama City, Panama, is in the same time zone as U.S. Central Time.
