Pierson Manville (Tempe, Ariz./Southwest WC), who was the Pennsylvania winner of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in 2024, has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week.
Manville went 4-0 en route to the gold medal at the U23 Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru. He teched his way into the gold medal match and then grabbed a 4-2 decision over 2026 Senior Pan American silver medalist Clisman Carracedo Veliz of Ecuador.
To start the tournament, Manville posted an 8-0 technical fall in his opening match against Puerto Rico’s Caleb Negron Escalera. Manville then put up 12 points against Mario Choc Choc of Guatemala in a 12-4 contest to close out the group portion of the 63 kg bracket.
In the semifinals, Manville scored his second shutout of the tournament in a 9-0 victory against Zeus Gonzalez Gonzalez of Mexico.
The championship this weekend is Manville’s fourth career age-group Pan American title. Last year, Manville won gold at the U20 Pan American Championships also in Lima, Peru. In 2021, he won gold in Greco-Roman and freestyle at the U17 Pan American Championships in Oaxtepec, Mexico.
Manville is coming off a redshirt freshman season at Arizona State that saw him qualify for the NCAA National Championships at 141 pounds. He also earned the No. 5 seed at the Big 12 Championships this winter.
