Legends interview with 3-time NCAA champ, sports medicine pioneer Henson now available

STILLWATER, Okla. - The National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to announce that the inaugural Legends interview is now available on the Mat Talk Podcast Network.

“We are excited about the Legends interviews because it gives fans the opportunity to hear the greats of our sport talk about their lives and careers in their own words,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. “Our goal is to preserve the sport of wrestling’s history, and these audio histories are important to helping us achieve it.”

The first Legends interview is with Dr. Stanley Henson, who was inducted into the NWHOF as a Distinguished Member in 1978.

Henson, Stan_head3A three-time NCAA champion at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) in the 1930s who was known for being one of the best wrestling technicians, the 100-year-old Henson is the oldest living NCAA champion. Henson went on to become a renowned surgeon who was a pioneer in sports medicine.

Henson, Stan_with GallagherHenson speaks about growing up in the Great Depression, working in the oil fields, wrestling for legendary coach and fellow NWHOF Distinguished Member Edward C. Gallagher, serving in the United States Navy, and his distinguished career in medicine.

The show can be heard for free at mattalkonline.com. It is also available via iTunes, Stitcher, Spreaker, and Soundcloud as well as an RSS link for use in other third-party podcasting applications like Downcasts, BeyondPod, and Podcast Republic.

Preserving the memory and legacy of the greatest names in wrestling for future generations, the Legends series is being funded entirely from donations, which can be made at www.patreon.com/mattalkonline. If donations exceed production costs, additional funds will be donated to the NWHOF.

The Legends interviews will be donated to the NWHOF to become part of the organization’s digital outreach.

Jason Bryant of the Mat Talk Podcast Network created the Legends interview concept, and also serves as the host and producer of the interviews. Bryant is president of the National Wrestling Media Association, and has been honored for his work as both a broadcaster and writer, including the Bob Dellinger Wrestling Writer of the Year award.

“I’ve wanted to do a show with our legends for a while, and crowdfunding has made that a reality,” said Bryant. “There are so many stories to tell and preserve, and we hope that fans of our great sport will enjoy and be supportive of the Legends series.”

National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum

America’s shrine to the sport of wrestling, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1976 to honor the sport of wrestling, preserve its history, recognize extraordinary individual achievements, and inspire future generations. Located in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the Hall of Fame has the largest collection of wrestling artifacts and memorabilia in the world including the Hall of Honors where wrestling legends are enshrined at the national, regional and state level. The diversity of the sport is highlighted with exhibits featuring females and such ethnicities as African Americans, Native Americans, and Latino Americans. There is also a library featuring historical documents and books on the sport as well as a theater. The Hall of Fame is currently closed to visitors as it prepares to undergo an entire interior renovation. It is scheduled to re-open in the summer of 2016, just in time to celebrate its 40th anniversary at the annual Honors Weekend induction ceremonies.
