CORALVILLE, Iowa – The U.S. men’s freestyle team returned to action on Sunday, May 10, inside Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, and continued its dominance at the 2026 Pan American Championships. The team was unbeaten throughout the opening session and secured two gold medals, one from Levi Haines in the 79-kilogram division and one from Trent Hidlay in the 92-kilogram division, in their round-robin brackets.
Liam Cronin, Real Woods, Ridge Lovett, Stephen Buchanan and Wyatt Hendrickson each qualified for the gold medal round in their respective brackets. The U.S. has secured four gold medals and one silver medal with five weights to finish this evening. Hendrickson was the Kansas winner of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award and Lovett was the Idaho winner in 2019.
Hidlay, a 2025 World Championships gold medalist, was dominant throughout the day and cruised to technical falls in each of his opening three matches, all of which ended 11-0. He then secured a pin at the 2:41 mark against Puerto Rico’s Shane Jones, finishing the day 4-0. After blanking Brazil’s Lucas Bordeaux Rego Alvan, Peru’s Pool Ambrocio Greifo and Canada’s Andrew Johnson, Hidlay conceded just two points in his final match to outscore his opponents 46-2 throughout the day.
Haines was also dominant in his round-robin bracket, giving up just two points of his own across his four matches. The 2025 World Championships silver medalist opened against Puerto Rico’s Michael Labriola and downed him 11-0. He then defeated Mexico’s Sergio Espinoza Muniz, 10-0, before defeating Canada’s Patrik Leder 13-2. Haines then disposed of Colombia’s Jhoan Serna Rodriguez in his last match via a 10-0 decision.
Buchanan dazzled in the 97-kilogram bracket in front of his home crowd, claiming two technical falls to earn a spot in the finals. After trailing 2-0 early in the quarterfinals against Jamaica’s Steven Burrell Jr., Buchanan used a pushout and a single-leg trip to take a 3-2 lead. From there, he never looked back and ultimately secured a 12-2 decision. In the semifinals, Buchanan held a 5-0 lead at the break and continued to dominate in the final three minutes. He closed the match with a double-leg takedown to earn an 11-1 result over Venezuela’s Cristian Sarco Colmenarez. Buchanan will take on Cuba’s Olympian, Arturo Silot Torres, in the gold-medal match.
Cronin claimed two technical falls in the 57-kilogram bracket against Guatemala’s Edwin Segura Guerra and Nicaragua’s Justin Rosales Lacayo. Cronin earned a shutout in the quarterfinals against Segura Guerra, concluding the match at the 3:24 mark. His final six points came from an underhook toss to the back and a gutwrench, bringing the score to 11-0. In the semifinals, Cronin jumped to an early 2-0 lead and pressured Rosales Lacayo throughout the match to earn the 11-1 victory in under two minutes. Up next, Cronin will square off against Darian Cruz, an Olympian from Puerto Rico.
Hendrickson earned two wins in the 125-kilogram division to secure a place in the gold-medal match. He closed the show early in the quarterfinals, earning a pin in just 31 seconds against Mexico’s Brandon Anguiano Flores. In the semifinals, Hendrickson delivered a dominant 10-0 win over Brazil’s Gabriel De Sousa Silva after scoring on a single leg and four gutwrenches within 53 seconds. He will take on Canada’s Jorawar Dhinsa in the finals.
Woods earned two victories in the opening session, including a 14-4 win in the quarterfinals and a 9-0 victory in the semifinals of the 65-kilogram division. Woods earned a technical fall over the Dominican Republic’s Tommy Garcia Sanchez in his first match of the day. He faced the Bahamas’ Shannon Hanna II in his second match and secured a head pinch on his first and final scoring efforts to earn the shutout as the seconds ticked off the clock. The 2025 World Championships bronze medalist will now take on Canada’s Peiman Biabani in a rematch of last year’s bronze medal match from Zagreb.
Ridge Lovett never conceded a point in the first session, beginning with a 10-0 win over Canada’s Michael Zale in just over a minute of action. Lovett faced Mexico’s Francisco Gonzalez Torres in the quarterfinals and immediately took his opponent down for two points. He then added three gutwrenches within 37 seconds to once again earn a 10-0 win. Lovett advanced past the semifinals after his opponent, Argentina’s Mauricio Lovera, medically forfeited and will now face Puerto Rico’s Victor Soto Rivera for the gold medal.
