A pair of age-group World champions will square off at 50 kg in women's freestyle for the U.S. World Team spot at 2026 Final X, presented by Kerberos Capital Management. Katie Gomez, a 2021 U17 World champion, will face two-time U17 World champion Morgan Turner on Friday, June 19, at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Gomez secured her spot at Final X after going 5-0 at the U.S. Open Championships. Her 5-0 mark with a pair of 10-0 technical falls also earned her the Outstanding Wrestler accolade in the Senior women’s freestyle division. In the championship match in Las Vegas, Gomez upended No. 1 seed Erin Golston in the finals, 5-0.
Along with her 2021 U17 World title, Gomez has medaled twice in four age-group World Championships. In 2022, she won bronze at the U20 World Championships. During the 2023 season, Gomez competed at both the U23 and U20 Worlds for Team USA.
Turner punched her ticket to Final X with three wins at the Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. After starting with an 11-0 technical fall, she continued her run of upsets with a 5-0 win over top-seeded Golston. In the championship match, against 2025 World Team member Felicity Taylor, Turner scored two points off an ankle pick as time was expiring to secure a 10-8 decision.
In her career, Turner has claimed a pair of U17 World titles, along with a U17 World bronze. This year, as a high school senior, Turner has already won the U20 World Team Trials and U23 Women’s Nationals, earning Outstanding Wrestler honors in both tournaments.
The only meeting between Gomez and Turner came at this year’s U.S. Open in the quarterfinals, where Gomez scored a 4-3 victory in what was her closest match of the tournament.
What’s at Stake?
Final X will determine the 2026 U.S. World Team in two international disciplines—men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle. In total, 20 weight classes will be contested, 10 in each discipline. The top two U.S. athletes in each weight class will wrestle a best-of-three series at Final X to determine the U.S. representative at the 2026 Senior World Championships.
This year will mark Gomez’s second Final X appearance. She competed at 2023 Final X, where she dropped both matches to 2022 World champion Dominique Parrish. The first match resulted in a fall, and the second contest was a 5-0 decision.
This will be Turner’s debut at Final X.
