MADRID, Spain – Two-time age-group World medalist Aden Attao captured silver for the U.S. during the opening day of the Grand Prix of Spain at Pabellón Central Consejo Superior de Deportes. Courtney Freeman also represented Team USA in Spain and won a bronze medal.

Attao started his run at 130 kg with a pin against Assar Amirov of Kazakhstan. After trailing 1-0 early in the match, Attao stormed back to grab a 7-1 advantage. Attao converted a four-point to a fall to close out the match with 47 seconds left.

In the semifinals, Attao notched a 3-1 decision against Austria’s Leonhard Junger to punch his ticket into the gold-medal bout.

Attao’s bid for gold came up short after dropping a 9-0 contest to age-group World medalist Franz Richter of Germany.

The silver medal is Attao’s second international medal at the Senior level following a gold medal at last year’s Bill Farrell Memorial International.

Freeman joined Attao in the 130 kg bracket and upended Abylaikhan Azbassarov of Kazakhstan, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. Freeman looked to make it an All-American championship match, but lost to Richter, 8-0.

Moving into the bronze medal match, Freeman rebounded to collect a 7-3 decision over 2026 Pan American bronze medalist James Ford II of Puerto Rico.

This is Freeman’s second medal at the Grand Prix of Spain after winning gold in 2023.

The Grand Prix of Spain continues on Saturday with the women’s freestyle portion of the tournament. Competition begins at 10 a.m. local time, 4 a.m. ET. The U.S. has 12 entrants in the women’s freestyle field.
