AMMAN, Jordan – Jordyn Raney won a bronze medal at 60 kg, the top U.S. performance on Wednesday, as Greco-Roman concluded at the U17 World Championships.

Raney secured a solid 6-1 decision over 2022 European U15 champion and 2024 European U17 bronze medalist Vadim Matros of Ukraine in the bronze medal match. The first period ended 1-1, with Raney getting a point when Matros was put on the shot clock and did not score, and Matros earned a step out. In the second period, Raney scored a takedown and got a gut wrench for a 5-1 lead. Ukraine challenged but was denied, giving Raney his final point of the match.

It was the second career U17 World Greco-Roman medal for Raney, as he claimed a gold medal at the 2023 U17 World Championships.

Raney finished with an impressive 4-1 record in the event, losing only in the semifinals by a 2-1 margin to 2024 European U17 champion Aykhan Javadov, who went on to win gold. Raney’s first three matches were technical falls, over Ziming Ding of China, Bende Olasz of Hungary and Aleks Margaryan of Armenia.

Placing fifth at 71 kg after losing a bronze medal match was Joseph Jeter at 71 kg. He was defeated by 2022 U15 European champion Giorgi Aladashvili of Georgia by technical fall, 9-0 in the medal round. Aladashvili scored a takedown and gut wrench for a 4-0 lead, then hit a four-point throw to make it 8-0. A USA challenge was denied, giving Aladashvili an additional point.

Jeter won a wild 10-7 decision in his repechage match against Yusuf Ahmadli of Azerbaijan to advance to the bronze-medal bout. On Tuesday, he fell 7-2 to eventual runner-up Vladislav Byrlia, an Individual Neutral Athlete.

In addition to Raney and Jeter, two other U.S. wrestlers in Group 2 were able to place in the top 10 of their weight class and secure team points for Team USA. Loc Webber, with a 1-1 record at 45 kg, placed ninth, while Domenic Munaretto, with a 1-2 record at 51 kg, finished 10th.

Team USA finished with two Greco-Roman medals, as Jordyn’s twin brother Jayden Raney won a gold medal at 55 kg on Tuesday. The United States placed eighth in the final team standings with 56 points. Claiming the team title was Iran with 140 points, with Uzbekistan in second with 113 points and Azerbaijan in third with 105 points.

In women’s freestyle, 2023 U17 World champion Piper Fowler was pulled back into repechage at 73 kg and remains eligible for a bronze medal.

On Thursday morning, Fowler will wrestle 2023 U17 World silver medalist Lotta Englich of Germany in a repechage match. Fowler beat Englich, 5-2 in the U17 World finals last summer. If Fowler wins her repechage match, she will face Khrystyna Demchuk of Ukraine for a bronze medal. Denchuk is a two-time European U15 champion and was third in the 2024 European U17 Championships

On Wednesday morning, Fowler scored a quick 12-0 technical fall over Aisanat Kalmamatova of Kyrgyzstan in just 56 seconds. In the quarterfinals, she was defeated by 2024 Asian U17 champion Lather, 6-0.

The competition continues with five weight classes in women’s freestyle on Thursday morning, with the USA entered in all of the weight classes. Hitting the mats will be Francesca Gusfa (40 kg), Morgan Turner (46 kg), Isabella Marie Gonzales (53 kg), Taina Fernandez (61 kg) and Kaili Manuel (69 kg). Turner was a 2023 U17 World champion.

The first session is at 10:30 a.m. local time, which is 3:30 a.m. U.S. Eastern time. Fowler will compete in repechage, and the other five U.S. women will wrestle in preliminaries. The second session is at 5:00 p.m. local time, which is 9:00 a.m. E.T. with Women’s Group 4 semifinals, followed by Women’s Group 3 medal matches at 6:00 p.m. local time.

A full set of brackets and match-by-match results is available on UWW Arena. A live broadcast of the event is available for the U.S. market at FloWrestling.com.
