Glen Takahashi

December 30, 1949 - December 31, 2008

Glen Takahashi was an icon in San Diego prep wrestling.

His high school coaching career lasted 33 years and he had a career dual meet record of 234-52-2 at University of San Diego High School (now Cathedral Catholic), El Cajon Valley High School, and then his final 19 seasons at Valhalla High School.

At Valhalla, his teams won the California Interscholastic Federation state title in 1985, finished runner-up in 1991 and were fourth-place finishers four times. Only four other schools earned more top five finishes at the CIF state championships than Takahaski's teams.

Takahashi coached 83 CIF champions and 46 Masters champions while also having 37 state medalists, seven individual state champions, 10 All-Americans and a national champion, David Lopez.

He was a nine-time Grossmont League Coach of the Year and five times was named the CIF SDS Coach of the Year.

As an athlete, Takahashi was a CIF-San Diego Section champion out of Monte Vista High, going undefeated from 1965-67, capturing the CIF San Diego Section Wrestler of the Year award in 1966. He continued his career at Brigham Young University and was All-Western Athletic Conference in 1970. He earned his bachelor's degree from BYU and his master's degree from San Diego State.

Takahashi was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2006.
