Larry Lauchle

Larry is recognized for his years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling. "¢ Coached the University of Pennsylvania, 1970-86 "¢ Three-time NCAA finalist "¢ National Champion in 1961 "¢ Pennsylvania State Champion in 1956 A native of north-central Pennsylvania, Larry Lauchle traveled the breadth of the state, and beyond, before settling into the heart of Philadelphia. A PIAA state champion at Muncy High School, Larry was a two-time NCAA runner-up at the University of Pittsburgh before winning a National title at 130 pounds in1961. Following graduation from Pitt, Larry served in the U.S. Marines where he was the worldwide military champion in 1963. After separation from the military, Larry began his coaching career at Shamokin High School, where he coached 2 PIAA state champions in three years. In 1968 he accepted the position of freshman wrestling coach at the University of Pennsylvania and, two years later, became the head coach at Penn, a position he held until 1986. His 1972 Quakers were the Ivy League co-champions. In 1986 he assumed his current position, the Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. For his dedication and lasting influence on wrestling, Lauchle is presented the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's "Lifetime Achievement Award" for the class of 2000.
