Arlin Severson

Very few in the sport of wrestling can lay claim to a true trifecta—winning an individual state title, then returning to lead their alma mater to both traditional state tournament and state dual meet championships as a coach. Arlin Severson achieved that rare distinction at New Hampton High School.

A 1957 Class B state champion at 112 pounds, Severson was a four-time state qualifier and a third-place finisher as a sophomore. His high school career set the tone for a lifetime devoted to wrestling excellence.

After high school, Severson continued his wrestling journey at Adams State in Colorado, where he was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 123 pounds. He compiled an impressive 45-5-5 record, served as team captain, and was named the program’s Outstanding Wrestler his senior season. He placed third in the highly competitive Rocky Mountain Conference three consecutive years.

Returning to New Hampton, Severson began a coaching career that would leave a lasting legacy. From 1968 to 1993, he guided the New Hampton program to 228 dual meet victories. His teams captured both the state traditional and dual meet titles in 1990 and 1993—completing a remarkable full-circle achievement at his alma mater.

During his 25-year coaching career, Severson developed eight individual state champions and 62 conference champions. His teams claimed seven conference titles and were known for their discipline, preparation, and heart—values Severson modeled every day.

Quiet and unassuming, Severson was known for his unmatched work ethic and constant presence on the mat. Former wrestlers often speak of his hands-on coaching style, intense drilling sessions, and emphasis on conditioning. While Severson was always quick to credit “good wrestlers, good assistant coaches, and a supportive community,” those who knew him understood that his tireless dedication was the foundation of New Hampton’s success.

Severson’s lifelong contributions to the sport have earned him numerous honors. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1989, received the IWCOA Wrestling Service Award in 1993, and was honored with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling Award from the Iowa Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

From athlete to coach to mentor, Arlin Severson’s impact on wrestling in Iowa is profound and enduring. His legacy continues to inspire future generations who step onto the mat.
