Roger Sanders

Roger Sanders might best be described as a man of many accomplishments.

Beginning at Pennsbury High School, where he was a two-time district champion, and continuing to West Chester University where in 1964 he won the NCAA College Division National Championship.

Roger started his coaching career at Palmyra High School in 1965, and in 1967 he became the head coach at New York University.

In 1972, with the program in disarray, he became head coach at Bloomsburg University. In short order, he moved the Huskies to a level that commanded respect and gained stature not only in Pennsylvania but nationally.

Roger remained at Bloomsburg as Head Wrestling Coach until 1993, earning 300 career wins, eight Pennsylvania State Conference team titles and two Eastern Wrestling League titles.

Simultaneously, as Roger accomplished an outstanding record as wrestling coach, he served seven years as Director of Athletics. During those seven years the athletic program made more significant advancements than in any other comparable period of time.

When Roger retired from coaching after 28 years, he continued to demonstrate his leadership and expertise by working with the United States Association of Blind Athletes. He served as coordinator of the USABA and accompanied the blind wrestling team to the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. In 1996 he dedicated his sabbatical leave from Bloomsburg University, at his own expense, to working with the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes locally, nationally, and internationally.

Roger and his wife Nancy have two daughters, Julie Lea and Traci Lyn.

Without reservation Coach Sanders has dedicated his time, knowledge, talent and energy in such a manner, as to develop in the young men he coached, self-esteem and strength of character which has carried them beyond victories on the wrestling mat.

His leadership and philosophy provided a way of life for achievement, services to society and the desire to reach beyond their grasp.
