Floyd Young Jr.
September 16, 1940 - June 15, 2025
Floyd Earl Young Jr. coached wrestling for 27 years.
A graduate of Laramie High School in Laramie, Wyoming, he earned his bachelor's degree in math from the University of Wyoming in 1964 and his master's degree in physical education in 1970.
He began his coaching career in Idaho, working 14 years at Skyline High School in Idaho Falls. Young then returned to Wyoming and became the wrestling coach at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming.
Young's prep teams won 15 district championships and seven state championships while his college teams placed three times at the national tournament. His college team placed third or better nationally in academic team rankings for five consecutive years, including winning the national title in 1987.
He was named Wyoming Coach of the Year in 1966 and was selected Coach of the Year by sportswriters in 1977. Young was named Idaho Coach of the Year four times while being selected as the United States Wrestling Federation National Coach of the Year in 1982 and the National High School Athletic Coaches Association District 7 Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1984.
Young hung up his wrestling shoes in 1991, but continued to teach at Northwest College. He served as a division chair and was instrumental in getting the nursing program established and in the construction of the Yellowstone Building to house the nursing program.
