Roy Phillips

Roy Phillips was often referred to by "Uncle" Charlie Mayser as the best wrestler he ever developed.

In the 145-pound weight class, Phillips won 28 out of 30 intercollegiate matches, 27 of them by falls. He finished second in the Eastern's in 1933 and was selected as the outstanding wrestler in the Nationals the same year. He was the captain of the undefeated 1933-34 squad. Phillips had been a cross country runner under the tutlage of "Uncle Charlie" Mayser back in the early 1930s.

Phillips ultimately served F&M as the varsity wrestling coach from 1949 to 1967.

Roy also spent time as the school's baseball coach for six years (1953-1958), before being tapped as the cross country coach beginning in 1958.

Before his stint at the College, he taught chemistry and coached at Valley Forge Military Academy, where he developed excellent wrestling teams.

During World War II, he coached the University of Pennsylvania wrestling team to a very successful season.

Prior to 1943, he coached wrestling at the high schools of Claysburg and Upper Merion.

A leading volunteer, Roy was secretary-treasurer and president of the EIWA Coaches Association from 1956-61 and also president of the EIWA from 1967-70.

He also officiated meets from 1934-55.
