Ralph Shatterly

Ralph Shatterly was a successful football coach, track coach, and Athletic Director at North Rowan and West Rowan High School over a 33-year span. A native of Yanceyville and 1957 graduate of Bartlett Yancy High, he attended Appalachian State Teachers' College, graduating in 1963. Shatterly began his career at North Rowan where he founded its wrestling program. In 1968 and 1969 he guided North Rowan to the Western North Carolina High School Activities Association championship. Amassing over 200 wrestling wins in 22 seasons at North Rowan, he moved to West Rowan in 1985, coaching an additional ten seasons and winning over 100 additional dual matches before retiring in 1995. Teams coached by Shatterly won conference championships in four different decades: the 1960s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. One of the standouts from his championship teams of the late 1960's, Buddy Lowery, went on to become a Hall of Fame coach at Davie County High. Shatterly has been inducted into the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame (2011), the Salisbury-Rowan County Sports Hall of Fame (2011) and the North Carolina Athletic Directors Hall of Fame (2014). His legacy includes the Ralph Shatterly award, created in 2015. It is selected annually by Rowan County wrestling coaches and presented to the county's coach of the year.
