Randy Calvert
The National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, is just off Interstate 35, but now Interstate 35 High School is also in the Wrestling Hall of Fame with the inclusion of the recently retired Randy Calvert.
Calvert's 410-109-1 career record in dual competition ranked him fifth on the all-time best list for wins when he retired last spring after 28 years at the top post of the Roadrunners. He coached 94 traditional state meet qualifiers with 52 winding up on the medal stand.
The list of medalists includes four champions, nine runners-up, four third-place finishers and nine fourth-place finishers. Twenty-six other wrestlers finished between fifth and eight place. He mentored five four-time state qualifiers, three of whom were state place-winners; seven three-time state qualifiers, 17 two-time state qualifiers and 10 two-time state place-winners.
Among his athletes were two undefeated wrestlers - Travis Brant in 1995 and Dallas Houchins in 2011. Seven years at the traditional state tournament his team turned in Top 10 finishes, including third place in 1995 and 2008 and fourth-place efforts in 2006 and 2011.
Nine times his team qualified for the state dual team tournament with a runner-up finish in 1995, third-place efforts in 1994 and 2007, and fourth place in 2003 and 2008.
His 2000 and 2008 teams finished the regular season undefeated. He was an eight-time South Central District Coach-of-the-Year.
