William Koll

The Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is proud to recognize William Koll as this year's Dave Schultz Award winner for the Empire State. William is the son of Rob and Rachel Koll and attended Lansing High School in Section IV. William won two New York State Public High School Championships in 2011 and 2013 and capped off his senior season with his third title at the 132 pound weight class. William is coached by Kris Harrington, who is also the Finger Lake Wrestling Club's Development Director and a former All-American wrestler at Brockport University. Koll is following in the steps of his famous grandfather, William Koll, who won 3 NCAA titles at Iowa State Teacher's College and his father, Rob, coach of Cornell University, who captured an NCAA championship at North Carolina University in 1988. William has won the prestigious Eastern State Tournament and King of the Mountain Wrestling Tournament as well as the Windsor Christmas Tournament, one of the oldest high school tournaments in the state. In addition, William has been a four- time Section IV Wrestling Tournament champion and has received many outstanding wrestlers' awards during his illustrious high school career. His high school record for 4 years at Lansing stands at 228 and 8. This summer William won the National Junior Greco Championships at the 132 weight class. He completely dominated the field by outscoring his opponents with a combined 63-0 and won all of his matches by technical falls. William will be attending Cornell University as a part-time student next year and working out with the FLWC. He will matriculate full time at Cornell University in the 2015-16 academic year and join his father on the Cornell University wrestling team. William achieved a near perfect composite score on his ACT's this year and graduated 3rd in his class. He also received the Superintendent's Award in June for his academic accomplishments. While attending Lansing High School William was active in the National Honor Society, served as the President of the Math Club, participated in the Lansing Orchestra and was involved in the Mental Peer-to-Peer Tutoring Program. In addition, he has served as a volunteer coach for the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club and the Lansing Youth Recreation Program and has worked with the "Hospice Cornell Community Challenge" program. Coach Harrington had this to say about his star wrestler, "Will is a great person" Harrington said, "He's the type of person you would want your daughter to date. He's a kid that looks out for his teammates; he's a kid that looks out for his little brother. As a wrestler, I don't know if you would want to wrestle him. He's a different kid out there. He's an animal on top. He's becoming great in all three positions." It is with great honor that the National Wrestling Hall of Fame of Upstate New York presents William Koll the 2014 David Schultz Award.
