Dennis E. Powell
Memories of Dennis Powell stay with his wrestlers to this day. After being one of the first 5 wrestlers to earn a letter at U of A, Dennis began a career in coaching. At Tempe HS, 1961-1974, and then another Tempe school, Marcos de Niza. His Tempe teams captured Team State Titles in 1968 & 1969. They were Runner-ups in 1966, 67, & 7-. In 1965 Dennis was named Amateur Wrestling News Coach of the Year. Dennis was also credited for starting "Mat Maids" in Arizona in an effort to involve more of the youth in the sport of wrestling. Dennis was owner/coach of the "Junior Thunderbird Wrestling Club" and coached at numerous camps such as the Mesa Community Summer Camp and the Sun Devil Wrestling Camp. He worked for Arizona/USA Wrestling and was a coordinator for the Christian Athlete Ministries Wrestling Camp. Arizona misses Dennis Powell.
