Mike Koury

After receiving the Male Scholar Athlete Award from Arizona State University, Mike Koury began a campaign of coaching and giving that continues today.

He began coaching in 1972 at his alma mater, Holbrook High School. He led Holbrook to the state team title with seven wrestlers in the finals and every member placing in the top four.

Koury started and continues to run the HAWK Wrestling Club.

He then moved to Peoria High School and started another wrestling club that also thrives today.

Koury has been an assistant coach, preferring the actual coaching over the paperwork, where he helped coach 30 individual state champions, including two four-time state champions, two national champions, four World Team members, and seven state team titles.

Named the national Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1997, he helps direct many wrestling tournaments, including the Arizona Interscholastic Association State Championships.

Koury was named Volunteer of the Year by Peoria Schools for the endless time he gives to help tutor students in math, computers, chess, and, you guessed it, wrestling.
