William Roths
A veteran at every level of officiating from youth thru collegiate, Mr. Roths is a proponent of the span especially at the high school level. He started as a New Hampton prep taking third in the 1970 State Meet. He continued wrestling while earning his degree in elementary education and physical education at Upper Iowa University He registered as an official with the IHSAA in 1972. After officiating sectional and district tournaments, he made his State Tournament debut in 1985. A run of 21 consecutive years ended in 2005. He then moved into the capacity of Supervisor of Officials for the tournament in 2006. His impressive profile includes active participation and being president of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association; twice being named their Official-of-the-Year (1989, 2004); three times Northeast Iowa District Official-of-the-Year; and Commissioner of Officials in the Northeast Iowa Conference, He is a member of the IHSAA Officials' Hall of Fame (1999), the Upper Iowa University Hall of Fame (2003) and the New Hampton High School Hall of Fame (2005). He also serves as head official for the NCAA Division III Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, a meet he refereed from 1986-1993 and 1998-2008. He was on the whistle for two NAIA national championships (1989, 1995), four Division III NCAA championships (1991-2006-2007-2008), six NCAA Division II National Duals (1997-1998-1999-2000-2002-2003), the 1998 NCAA Division I National Duals, three Division II National Duals (2006-2007-2008), as well as six Big 10 Collegiate Conference Tournaments (1998-2005). In 2008 he won the prestigious Wrestling USA magazine's Official-of-the-Year. He is an accomplished vocalist and in addition to refereeing the 1995 state championships, he also sang our National Anthem before a capacity crowd. He remains engaged in community and church service work. He and his wife Mary are the parents of two daughters.
