The Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, presented annually to a high school senior, is based equally on outstanding wrestling success, scholastic achievement and citizenship or community service. Winners are chosen at the state and regional levels, with the national winner being named at the Wrestling Hall of Fame Honor weekend in June. Nick Tighe had the honor of wrestling for National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Coach Gene Mills at Phoenix High School. Under coach Mills' tutelage, Nick won three New York State Division II championships. His parents, David and Diane Tighe, enjoyed the journey as they have watched Nick accomplish many outstanding goals in the sport of wrestling. He is a 5 time New York State Tournament qualifier and is a 4 time Section III Division II Champion. In addition, Nick is a 2 time NHSCA High School All-American and was Section III Wrestler of the Year in 2012 and 2013. This year Nick was selected as the Division II State Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Furthermore, to cap off his senior year, Nick received the Section III Division II State Tournament Sportsmanship Award. Nick has completed many hours of community service. In 2012 Nick received the Presidential Award for 300 hours of community service. He served as Acolyte at his church and participated in feeding the homeless in Syracuse during Thanksgiving. Nick has been active in numerous school organizations and participated in "homeless night" to raise money for the Syracuse Rescue Mission. While at Phoenix High School, Nick has been a member of the Leadership Club, Sport Club, has served four years on student council and has been on the Principal's Cabinet. With Nick's list of accomplishments, both on and off the mats, he has developed a strong foundation for success in the future. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to name Nicholas Tighe recipient of the Dave Schultz Excellence Award and we wish him the best of luck in his wrestling career at Binghamton University
