George Wilfong

West Puyallup Junior High 1962-1967 Puyallup High School 1968-1995 1962 was the year that "Coach Wilfong" arrived in Puyallup as a teacher and coach. For 33 consecutive years Wilfong coached every football, wrestling and track season until his retirement in 1995. That is 99 straight seasons without a break. Since retirement, George has continued to volunteer in football and wrestling at Puyallup High School, the 2012-2013 school year marks George's 51st year of involvement with the football team and 50th year working with the wrestling program. Wilfong was the Head Wrestling Coach at Puyallup High School for 25 years when he replaced Hall of Famer Ramon Barnes in 1970. Wilfong's teams captured 11 South Puget Sound league titles, including a stretch of 8 straight from 1980-1987. His teams were Regional Champions 5 times and placed in the top ten at the State Tournament 10 times, including 3rd in 1991. Three state champions and 42 state placers have wrestled for Wilfong and his overall dual meet record is 234-99-7 (.688%). George has always stressed the importance of giving back to the sport of wrestling. He hosted numerous freestyle tournaments and was a coach for the Washington Cultural Exchange Wrestling teams to Germany in 1980 and Australia in 1983. He served as the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Region 3 Representative for 11 years and was the Mat Classic Mat Crew Director from 1996-2004. Many of George's athletes have gone on to coach wrestling including his son Tom at Stanwood HS. George is extremely proud of the fact that four of his wrestlers have become State Wrestling Coaches of the Year. A lifetime member of the Washington State Coaches Association, Coach Wilfong has received numerous accolades. He received the 1980 Tacoma area Coach of the Year Award, and was the PHS "Jerry Redmond" Coach of the year in 1991 and 1995. George was named the 3A State Coach of the Year in 1983 and was the South Puget Sound League Coach of the year in 1980 and 1995, and Region III Coach of the Year in 1983. Wilfong was inducted into the Washington State Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997. Times change, coaches come and go, and high school kids go through different fads and phases, but George Wilfong has remained the one constant figure in Puyallup High School athletics. He brings a historical perspective and is a great role model for what a man is supposed to be. Wilfong's longevity is unique and is something to celebrate. Coach George and his wife Sibyl continue to reside in Puyallup, they have three grown children, Peggy, Tom and Christi, and have four grandchildren.
