Doug Chapple
Fin Hill JH 1967-1970 Redmond JH 1974-1977 Juanita High School 1977-1980 Lake Washington HS 1982-1992 Doug Chapple spent 50 years in the Education profession as a teacher, coach, athletic director and administrator. Chapple attended the University of Washington where he played football and was a member of the UW 1960 Rose Bowl team. Doug's passion was to work with kids in the sport of wrestling. He served as an assistant wrestling coach seven years and head wrestling coach 19 years. During his career as a head wrestling coach he amassed 302 dual meet victories. His dual meet record at Lake Washington HS was 109-17-3. His LWHS teams were Kingco Champions three times; placed in the top three of the league nine of ten years; won the Regional Championship in 1989. Chapple's LWHS teams were awarded the WIAA State Academic Championship in 1989 and 1992. During his LWHS career he coached 3 state champions, a second, a third place finishers, and numerous other state placers. Chapple was a founding member of the Pacific Northwest Wrestling Officials Association and served as Assigning Commissioner from 1969-1972. He served as a wrestling official for eight years before a knee injury ended his wrestling officiating career. Doug has been recognized for his lifelong dedication to students and wrestling. He was the State Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1989; WIAA Outstanding Service Award for Coaching, 1980; Wrestling Sportsmanship Award, 1983; National High School Coaches Award in 1989; Inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994; and Inducted into the John Wooden National Wall of Honor for Coaches in 2004. In addition to these recognitions, three honors establish Doug Chapple as an outstanding teacher and coach; In 1992, the Lake Washington High School Gymnasium was named the D.A Chapple Gymnasium in his honor; In 1992 the Kingco Conference Athletic Directors established the Douglas A. Chapple Sportsmanship Award in wrestling; and the Douglas A Chapple, $15,000 scholarship fund was established by parents in the Kirkland community to aid wrestlers who were in need of financial assistance to further their education and was awarded from 1991 through 2002. Doug retired from education in June of 2002 and moved to Bellingham to be closer to family. He returned to the Lake Washington School District as a long term substitute for four years and was the Lake Washington HS athletic director in 2007. Chapple stays active with his church as well as mentoring students at Lynden Christian HS each week. He works with and mentors Young Life leaders from Western Washington University and has been associated with the Young Life program for 59 years. Doug and his wife Emmary have two grown sons and five grandchildren.
