Rolland Holterman
Mount Baker High School 1965-1989 Rolland Holterman was introduced to the sport of wrestling at Clark College. The following year he transferred to Western Washington College where he wrestled for Hall of Famer Dr. Bill Tomaras. He then transferred to Central Washington College but did not wrestle and graduated in 1965. Upon graduation he accepted a teaching position in the Mount Baker School District. He started the wrestling program at Mount Baker in 1965 with the assistance of the Superintendent who was looking for an outlet for the problem boys to get rid of their hostility. That first year they wrestled during sixth period in the bus garage on a canvas mat. At the same time Rolland coached the basketball "C" tem after school. During his entire coaching career he never had a wrestling room or weight room and rarely ever had a full size mat for turn-outs. While coaching 24 years at Mount Baker, Holterman compiled a dual meet record of 243-55-4. Mount Baker has had one or more participants at every state tournament from 1968 to the present. Over those years he had 110 wrestlers qualify for the state tournament, 43 earning medals. His teams placed third in 1988 and 1989. Many of those who wrestled for Coach Holterman have gone on to coach and officiate the sport of wrestling. Son Chris is currently the wrestling coach at Rainier High School. In order to help build the Mount Baker high school wrestling program, Coach Holterman and several local families started the Piranha Wrestling Club in 1967 and the club is still active to this day. Rolland was selected by his peers as the 1983 Coach of the Year. Rolland was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992. Since his retirement from teaching in 1998 he has remained active in various phases of wrestling. He and his wife Jean greatly enjoy being on the staff at Mat Classic, the state Wrestling Championships each year. He was awarded the Paul Reiman-Bo Campbell-Ken Driskill Award in 2008-2009 for his outstanding contributions to wrestling. Rolland and Jean still reside in Deming and continue to enjoy their adult children Chris, Heidi and Julie and their families including eight grandchildren.
