Neil DeWitt

It was 1973 when Neil started a brand new wrestling program at Thatcher. He then went on a journey to spread his passion for the sport of wrestling. Next, it was Show Low, where he coached their first year with seniors and captured 3 individual State Titles. While at Joseph City, his teams captured a 1976 State Runner-up and back to back State Titles in 1978 & 1979. Then, south to Pima, where he once again started a new program at the junior high and assisted at the high school. Pima captured the 2A State Title in only its third year of competition. His teams over the years earned championships in 13 tournaments and his wrestlers captured 15 individual State titles. He officiated for 9 years, coached cultural exchange teams, directed the State Wrestling tournament for 8 year, and as an administrator, led a consistent effort to build and protect the interests of wrestling at the regional and state levels. Neil has authored and published two books and a CD to assist athletic directors and wrestling coaches in organizing, supervising, and promoting the sport of wrestling. He was named Outstanding Wrestling Official in 1986 and ACA Coach of the Year in both 1976 and 1979. His support for wrestling earned him "1998 State Man of the Year" by Wrestling USA Magazine.
