Robert Newman
Robert spent 34 years molding young men through the sport of wrestling. That's a long time for a guy that only wrestled in high school to fill time between the seasons of what his real passion, baseball. Since then he spent his entire career in the Marana school district. From 1973 to 1986 it was Marana HS. After winning the State Title in 1983, Robert transferred to Marana Mountain View where, once again starting from scratch, built a powerhouse program from 1987-2007. In addition to the 1983 State title, his teams captured two State Runner-up trophies and 9 Regional Championships. Individual wrestlers brought home 27 State titles and 77 State finishes. Having a personal goal of 400 career wins fell short with a record 399 wins and interestingly, one of these losses was to one of his wrestlers who graduated and came back as the head coach at Marana HS. Robert was named 4A Coach of the Year in 1983, Southern Coach of the Year in 1996 and 2007. He was also named Citizen Coach of the Year for the 4A/5A in 2003. Having more than 1050 wrestlers under his tutelage it's no wonder that people in the South refer to Robert as the "Father of Marana Wrestling".
