John McGlumphy

When speaking about Arizona Wrestling History you will need to know about John McGlumphy. John was a pioneer in wrestling, originally starting the first rural school wrestling program in Southern Arizona, at Benson HS in 1959. He also founded the Benson Middle School program in 1967. It was 1959 when John hosted the first ever multiple wrestling dual meet held in Arizona. John didn't confine himself to Benson as he was instrumental in helping many Tucson and other southern Arizona schools start their programs. After retiring from the head position in Benson, John stayed on as the assistant until 1976. He was the head coach at St. David Hs in 1992-93. His teams captured the A-B-C State Championships in 1971, a State Runner-up trophy in 1963 and 3rd place finished in '62, '66, '72', and '73. He coached 22 State Champions, and over 68 State Placers. John was inducted into the Arizona Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the year 2000. Without exception, his wrestlers and contemporary's agree that "Coach Macs" greatest attribute was his ability to motivate student athletes to become successful citizens.
