Rick Johnson
In the 1970's Rick worked to promote the first statewide high school wrestling tournaments and helped to bring cultural exchange programs to Arizona. Rick also helped in the transition from AAU to the USA Wrestling of today. He ran countless camps, including the Bobby Douglas Camp of Champions. Rick worked with Olympic Team Coach Bill Weick in creating a training film series used in the 1970-1980 era. As a high school coach, his team's dual meet was 11609. He coached 18 individual State Champions and 32 Region Champions. Three of his wrestlers earned National titles in Freestyle and Greco Roman. He was named ACA Coach of the Year in 1997 and was the only wrestling coach to be named AZ Coach of the Year by Arizona prep Magazine. In 1974 Rick was the co-founder of the Arizona Wrestling Coaches Association and its first President. After he left coaching, Rick has remained a supporter of wrestling as an athletic administrator. He has directed state tournaments and has served on the state wrestling tournament committee for 3 decades. Currently, he is working with the IBN sports to bring wrestling to internet TV and public television.
