Steven Mays

In 1984 Steve Mays was the Michigan Class B 105 pound State Runner up but it's the wrestling and career path after that that makes him worthy of the Outstanding American honor. Upon graduation Steve enlisted in the Navy and competed on the All Navy team from 1987 - 2001, winning the 1999 National Championship . Additionally in 1999 , he was a Greco World Team member and Pan Am Bronze Medalist. He was the 1989, 1992 and 1999 Armed Forces Champion and was named the Navy M ale Athlete of the year in 1999. He also was a member and team captain of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team. With all this competition one would think there would be little time for service. However, Steve served as a Flight Deck Officer aboard several aircraft carriers and at shore bases in support of the War on Terror and in both Gulf Wars. He is among the select few to rise up through the ranks and reach the position of Chief Petty Officer. He has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals, 5 Good Conduct Medals, Meritorious Unit Commendation, two Navy Expeditionary Medals, two National Defense Medals and three Sea Service Ribbons. After his retirement of22 years of active duty service, Steve continues to serve America as a civil service employee for the United States Navy.
