Jaye Copp

Jaye Copp has been a teacher for 35 years for Frederick County Public Schools while also coaching wrestling for 27 years, including 21 as head coach.

He became head coach at James Wood High School in 1983 after the death of his mentor, George "Willie" Walters. Jaye led his teams to over 300 wins and coached numerous district, regional and state champions before his retirement from coaching in 2004 after his team finished fourth in the AA Virginia state tournament. He credited his coaching success to the expertise of his assistant coaches - Clint Jones, Pepper Martin, Bob Kane, Jason Barbe, Greg Walker, Terry Boyd and Doug Boswell.

In 1979, Copp and fellow James Wood assistant coach Gary Strosnider started Winchester Wrestling Officials Association. Many of the referees had wrestled for Copp and became officials because of his influence, including Terry Boyd, Ralph Orndoff, and John Bryant.

In 1984, Copp teamed with Orndoff, Strosnider and Bill Walker to start the Willie Walters Wrestling Club to honor Walters while also expanding their youth wrestling programs. Club members had an opportunity to wrestle teams from Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The creation of the club proved very successful and continues to have a positive impact on middle school and high school wrestling programs in Frederick County.

Jaye has three wonderful children, Carrie, Josh and Kate, who are the joy of his life.
