Michael Davey

Michael Davey is a second-generation member of a well-known and respected wrestling family. Michael has spent his entire life contributing to the sport of wrestling. He represents the real meaning of "Lifetime Service to Wrestling". As a high school wrestler Mike began his career under the tutelage of Hall of Fame coach, Bob Bury. Mike was half of the Davey brother's team wrestling for Calhoun High School. Calhoun is one of two spins off schools from the great Mepham High. While at Calhoun, Mike and his brother Tim were standout kids as wrestlers, students and citizens. Michael competed on the varsity level and was successful winning individual championships and playing a major role in Calhoun's league championship.

Moving on to college, Mike wrestled for the State University of New York Cortland where he led the team to a New York Collegiate team championship by securing a second place in his weight class. Upon completion of his academic work, he started a job in South Side High school in Rockville Center, New York. It was there that Mike was able to use all the information he received from his dad and his uncles. He became the coach of a program that demonstrated little success until his arrival. During his stint as the head coach, Mike had much success. One of them was his longevity as a coach for thirty-five years, which was the longest tenure of any coach in tile district. Add that to coaching a total of forty-nine qualifying champions, forty kids who became" "All County" wrestlers". He produced 5 County Champions and four of them became "All-State" Wrestlers. Mike's South Side teams won over 200 dual meets, turning around years of weak performances. Coach Davey's teams accounted for 6 league championships. Following those accomplishments, he was inducted into the "South Side" Hall of Fame.

His Wrestling and coaching accomplishments were greatly enhanced with the extra efforts he put into the wrestling community

Mike instituted and operated pre-teen wrestling programs for kids from five separate schools. By doing so, he introduced hundreds of youngsters to wrestling. For the junior high and high school kids he created the Cyclone Wrestling Club, introducing tiles dedicated to free style and off-season tournaments.

As a special project, Mike published a book about South Side Wrestling. He then created several team scholarships for athletes who had come through his programs. On the administrative front, he led the Nassau County Coaches Association as president. He worked as a leader by heading up various committees for over fifteen years and hosted the league qualifier tournament for twelve years. He also served as The Nassau County Wrestling Coordinator for New York State.

In 1990, while still coaching and working as Dean of South Side High school, Mike became a charter member of The Friends of Long Island Wrestling and ultimately, became directly involved in the Downstate Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. In that capacity he served on the nominating committee and worked on the annual publication of Long Island Wrestling As a side avocation, Michael has spent four years researching and publishing a second edition of The History, of Long Island Wrestling.

Most recently, Michael has secured a big part in the upcoming Hollywood movie about wrestling, starring Paul Giamatti the movie title is "Win - Win". Perhaps, Michael’s newest efforts in the movies will provide him with his next career, following another local wrestler, Billy Baldwin.
