Alex Ekstrom
Alex Ekstrom, New York state Section V's ï¬rst four time State Champion is one of a very few in the nation who has earned a full scholarship to an NCAA Division I wrestling program. ln the fall of this year, Alex will become an integral participant in the University of Oklahoma's prestigious nationally-ranked team under the direction of 17-year veteran coach, Jack Spates. Alex's storied joumey began in the pee-wee wrestling program at Palmyra-Macedon Central School. Upon ï¬nishing his senior season, he had amassed a varsity record of 226-19, 11 Outstanding Wrestler titles, numerous tournament championships, and an unprecedented four state titles for a Section V wrestler. In addition, he and his teammates, under the direction of Coach Brian Quick, became one of the most successful and respected teams in the State. Always ready to meet a challenge, Alex eagerly trained to prepare his mind and body for the ultimate match of the year in 2009 when he met a three-time State champion in the course of the New York's annual toumament in Albany. That memorable match ended with a 4-3 decision and will long stand as an example of dedication and determination that coaches strive for in their athletes. Alex has served his school and community as a volunteer as a motivational speaker for the Middle School, coach for the pee-wee team, ofï¬cial for pee-wee competitions, mentor for middle school students, and Rotary Club participant. Alex believes in giving back to his community and serves as a role model for younger folks to emulate. The core values of Alex's character and thinking are attributed to his parents, Eric and Lynn Ekstrom, brother Eric, other family members, and Coach Quick who have always created a foundation of support and encouragement for him. As he heads to the University of Oklahoma, this one factor will serve him well in his continued quest for excellence. The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to name Alex Ekstrom as the recipient of the Dave Shultz High School Excellence Award.
