Stephen Neal

October 09, 1976 - Present

Stephen Neal won three Super Bowl rings as an offensive lineman for the New England Patriots, but it was his wrestling career that paved the way. Despite never playing football in college, Neal played 10 years as a guard for the Patriots before retiring in 2011. Neal was part of winning Super Bowl teams in 2002, 2004, and 2005.

Neal’s football experience came on a wrestling mat during an outstanding collegiate and international career. While attending San Diego High School, Neal placed once at the prestigious California state tournament: a fourth place finish in the 189-pound class in 1994. But at the conclusion of his career at California State University, Bakersfield, Neal would be recognized among the best wrestlers this country has produced.

During his freshman year with the Roadrunners, Neal made his presence known amongst heavyweights. He placed fourth at the 1996 NCAA tournament as the 10th seed, and was a crucial part of his team’s third-place finish. During his sophomore season, Neal placed second at the 1997 NCAA tournament— dropping a close match in the championship finals.

In the subsequent two years, Neal would string together one of the most successful runs in U.S. history. As a junior, he won the 1998 NCAA tournament with a 20-5 victory in his championship match—becoming just the second wrestler in collegiate history to score 20 points in the NCAA finals.

His 1999 season was even more impressive. As a senior, Neal won his second NCAA tournament title following his second consecutive undefeated season. Neal’s overall college record was 153-9. Immediately turning his focus to freestyle wrestling, Neal won the U.S. Open, the Pan American Games, and the World Championships. He won the FILA outstanding wrestler award, given to the best wrestler in the world. Following his historic 1999 season, Neal placed second at the 2000 Olympic Trials before turning his focus full-time to professional football.

In recognition of success at the highest level in two sports, Stephen Neal is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
