Ray Groszkowski
Ray started his wrestling career at Mount St. Joseph High School where he would place twice in the MSA championships. This would be the start of a 5 decade love affair with the sport of wrestling.
After graduating from the Mount he took his wrestling skills to Towson State College. There he would place three times in the Mason Dixon Championships winning it twice and placing second once. He would also qualify two times to the Division II National Championships.
He would graduate in 1972 take a teaching job with Baltimore County Public School and becoming an assistant Coach at Towson from 1972 to 1977. In 1977 Ray took over the reins of the Tiger program till 1982.Under his guidance Towson would move to the Division I level were they would qualifier a number of wrestlers to the national championships. This was done without having any type of scholarships to offer his athletes.
Ray coaching career would take him to Franklin High School where he would lead the Junior Varsity team for two years and moving on the Owings Mills High school were with his help the Owings Mills Athletic program would take off.
While At Owings Mill Coach “G'' as he was affectionately called, would be named Athletic director as well as Head Varsity Football coach, jv wrestling Coach and Head Varsity Lacrosse coach, were did he find the time to do it all. It takes a special man to Head Varsity Football coach for 12 years and
Head JV coach for another 4 years, Varsity Lacrosse coach for 14yrs and 18yrs as the JV Wrestling Coach, all while being the Athletic Director of a high school, the energizer rabbit has nothing on Ray.
Under his leadership the JV program would win 2 championships and place in the top 2 another 5 times. With Ray feeding the varsity with skill wrestler it enabled the varsity program under Coach Guy Pritzker to win a state record 11 state championships. If this were not enough Ray was the site director for the MPSSA State Wrestling Championships from 1980 to 1994 and then the MPSSAA tournament director till 1997. In his spare time during this period he was also the Baltimore County Tournament Director from 1987 to 1991.
During this time he was also helping in raising 7 Children: Kevin, Jennifer, Sean, Timothy, Jessica, Kristen and Robert. Kevin, Sean, and Timothy would all go on to win Baltimore County Champions; Sean would also win a State Championship.
He is still active in developing young men in the sport of wrestling by leading the wrestling program at Eastern Tech High School in Baltimore County the past 4years.
Ray Grozskowski career as a competitor, coach and administrator has left a lasting and positive impact on the wrestling community in Maryland of for the past five decades. When one looks for the perfect example of what service means one doesn’t need to look fare just find Coach 'G".
