Bob Newton

Bob Newton began his wrestling career at Parkville High School with Coach Al Miller. He graduated from Parkville in 1965, the same year he placed fourth in the Baltimore County Wrestling Tournament, and went on to Essex Community College where he was the 1967 Tri-State Junior College Wrestling Champion under Coach George McKelvie. He then transferred to Towson University where he worked with Coach Bill Forbes.

After graduating from Towson in 1970 with a degree in physical education, Bob taught in Baltimore County Public Schools for 34 years, retiring in 2004. During his career, he not only taught physical education at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, but also served as Athletic Director at Lansdowne High School and worked as a classroom kindergarten teacher and special education teacher serving high school students.

He's also responsible for starting the Maryland Junior Wrestling League program at Loch Raven Junior High in partnership with Bernie Levin and Bruce McCurnin. In 2004, Bob received an award for his dedicated service to the students and athletes of Baltimore County Public Schools.

After retiring from the school system, he spent five years as a veterinary technician at Northwind Animal Hospital. As a member of the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association from 1970-2004, Bob held a number of key positions, including president, vice president, treasurer, applicant chairman, and member of the assigning committee. From 1997-2004, he was the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Interpreter for Wrestling. As a referee, Bob officiated at many county, district, and regional tournaments, including more than 20 state tournaments for public and private schools.

Bob has received numerous honors and awards relating to his work as a wrestling official - he was ranked as a top official by coaches and peers, named the number one high school official for three years in a row at the Virginia Duals, honored as the Maryland State Wrestling Association Official of the Year in 2002, inducted into the Baltimore County Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2006, and granted the inaugural MWOA Gold Whistle Award, which recognizes an official who has continuously achieved an extraordinary level of success throughout his career.

Bob and his wife, Barbara, live in Cub Hill. They have two daughters and two young grandchildren.
