Chuck Panerio

Chuck coached the Ephrata Tigers for 14 years with a record of 184 wins, 53 losses, and 3 ties. This included ten conference championships, two Sub-Regional and Regional Championships. His teams placed in the top ten in state five times-10th in 1972 and 1973, 5th in 1974, 3rd in 1976, and 4th in 1977. Coach Panerio was selected Washington State Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1973. During the 1963-1964 season, Ephrata wrestling made history"”they upset the Moses Lake Chiefs during league competition and went on to be conference champions. In 1970-71, they went on to distinguish themselves as the first team to defeat Moses Lake in their own gym. Adding an additional two times of defeating rival Moses Lake, Coach Panerio considers this one of his coaching highlights. Coach Panerio also coached the Ephrata baseball team for 10 years. During his tenure as coach his team was conference champions. He retired in 1990 from Ephrata School District after 24 years as a high school physical education teacher. He also spent six years teaching 5th grade. He still attends many high school and community college events, as well as University of Washington and Mariner games. His wife, Helen lost her battle with cancer in 1999 and his son was killed in an automobile accident. He has two daughters, Deona Behrens and Krista Panerio.
