Jim Meehan

For over 45 years Jim Meehan has been, a wrestler, coach, tournament Worker, tournament director, committee member and sports administer all in the great state of Maryland. However, if you ask Jim about all those years of participation in wrestling, he will tell you that he is just a huge fan of the sport and likes being involved!

While at Walter Johnson HS he wrestled to a 22-3-1 record and won the 1966Regional/Tri County tournament pitting the best of Prince Georges, Anne Arundel, and Montgomery counties long before there was a state tournament.

At Montgomery College in Rockville, Jim continued his wrestling career while earning his Associate of Arts Degree and was a member of the 1968 Maryland Junior College Conference Championship Team. Jim was a two year starter at Towson State University and wrestled to a 44-7 record helping to lead Towson to the Mason-Dixon conference title his senior year.

After one year as an assistant coach at Walter Johnson, Jim took over the head job and led the Bethesda school to a 102-92-2 record, a division title, and in 1976 coached Rob Tananbaum to the 112 lb state championship.

Once his high school coaching days were over, Ed Masood/Coordinator of Physical Education and Athletics for the Montgomery County Public system named Jim the first MCPS Sports Director (in any sport) to oversee the day to day county wrestling program. In that position Jim developed both JV & varsity scheduling for the sport, conducted pre and post season coache's meetings, staffed weigh-in and table personnel, acted as chairman for the seeding and tournament competition, help implement the MPSSAA certification system. Jim also served on the MPSSAA wrestling committee for twenty years.

When Cale Sanderson won his 4" Division I title without a loss and was not on the cover of the April 2 issue of Sports Illustrated, Jim penned a letter to the editor of SI letting all who would read that the qualities that both Mr. Sanderson and the sport of wrestling portray rightly deserved to be celebrated as a cover story. SI printed Jim's letter the next week. In November of 2008 Olney Elementary School of American named their Gymnasium after Jim.

Jim directed the 3A/4A State Tournament for over ten years; he is stepping down this season but will continue to host and direct the 3A/4A Regional Tournament at Sherwood.

With three very successful Division l programs in the area and the annual trip to the NCAA Championships, he plans on staying a huge fan.
