Ed Heincelman

If you talk to anyone who knows Ed Heincelman you will listen to them describe Edas a man of honesty and integrity. He is known as a father, a husband, a teacher, a coach and as a mentor who has been involved in training young men who have gone on to coach and referee the sport of wrestling. Ed has had tremendous success with his athletes, but he is just as proud of those who might not have been as successful as those who went on to excel at the regional and state level. He has had a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of young people who have benefited from his message that individual effort of the highest caliber is necessary to achieve success both on and off the mat.

Ed competed in both wrestling and football while a student at Muncy High School. He was later elected to that high school's Hal of Fame. Ed graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where he continued to compete on the mat. He was drafted and served his country with a 14 month tour of duty in Vietnam. When Ed returned from his military obligation he attended Lycoming College where he earned his teaching certificate.

In 1972 he came to Montgomery County and immediately began teaching and coaching at Wheaton High School and the Gaithersburg Boy's Wrestling Club. Ed would often leave the high school practice and then attend the youth practice to help with the development of those very deserving young athletes. He was very proud of the achievements of his own son, Marc, who became a state champion while attending High School.

Ed worked as the head wrestling coach at Einstein, Rockville and Magruder High Schools. He always took an active role in the lives of his athletes. Ed was known to emphasize dedication and commitment from his wrestlers. His knowledge of the sport and his appreciation of sportsmanship were evident during both practices and competition... This standard of excellence was something that every Heincelman coached athlete aspired towards.

During the last several years of his career Ed worked as assistant coach at Northwest High School In that capacity he was able to mentor one of his former wrestlers who had lcarned to love this great sport through his association with Ed.
