Marty Sherman
Marty Sherman has dedicated more than four decades to high school wrestling.
Sherman graduated from Saratoga in 1961 and from Ithaca College, where he was a physical education and hygiene major, in January 1966.
Unlike many of his soon-to-be peers in the Hall of Fame, Sherman didn't compete in wrestling at the high school or collegiate level. His introduction to the sport came when he was offered a physical education job at Corinth Central School in which he would coach year-round, as assistant football coach, head Wrestling coach and assistant track coach.
Sherman's efforts in the years that followed built one of New York State's most outstanding and successful wrestling programs.
He would hold that head coaching job at Corinth from the fall of 1966 until his retirement in 1999. During those 33 years, his teams recorded 304 victories, making him one of 37 coaches in state history to crack the 300-win barrier. While his teams picked up multiple accolades and sectional titles, Sherman was named Section II Coach of the Year twice.
Following his retirement from Corinth, Sherman served as the Section 2 wrestling coordinator until 2007. He currently serves as the New York State Wrestling Chairman, a position he has held since 2008. Among his notable accomplishments during his time on the job was securing Albany's Times-Union Center as a site for the high school wrestling state championships for the foreseeable future.
Sherman welcomed the continued involvement in the sport after leaving Corinth.
He was inducted into the New York State High School Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003
Marty credits his wife Denise and his two daughters, Sarah and Michelle, for their support and encouragement during his 43 years of involvement with wrestling. He also credits the efforts of competitors Jack LaBombard of Queensbury, Bob Carthy of Glens Falls, George Chickanis of Hudson Falls, and Andy McGuggin of South Glens Falls for helping him along the way.
The Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Marty Sherman by presenting him with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award.
