Eric Kopsch

February 29, 1944 - January 27, 2026

Eric Kopsch has worked as a volunteer coach throughout the Detroit area serving AAU and Michigan/USA Clubs and programs for over 42 years. He is well known for his use of "Visualization in Sports Psychology".

Eric found his way to Dean Rockwell and helped establish the Michigan Wrestling Club in 1965. Eric competed successfully before realizing his future was in coaching and officiating. As a Michigan Wrestling Club and assistant USA coach, he played an important role in the wrestling development of Rudy Williams, John Matthews, Steve Fraser and many more.

He served as president of the Detroit Chapter of the Amateur Athletic Union for five years while also being a cultural exchange director and developing exchange programs with Japan, Canada, Germany, and many more countries. Eric also took Michigan teams to Turkey, Sweden, Japan and Germany and more for competitions.

Eric built quite a reputation as a top-notch mat official and was named USA Wrestling's Official of the Year at the Junior Nationals in 1990. He has refereed in many countries and became one of USA Wrestling's top instructors of officiating technique.

He was inducted into the National AAU Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2007 and received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award from the Michigan Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2009.

As president Eric reestablished the Michigan Chapter, following a four-year lull, in 2015 and served on the board of directors through 2018 before remaining a member of the advisory board.
