Phyllis Meyerhoff
Phyllis Meyerhoff Wrestling Involvement: 1966 to 2014 Phyllis married into the sport of wrestling. The family chose to make wrestling a family activity and agreed everyone would be involved whenever possible. Phyllis soon became active in the running of local tournaments and became the person who ran the registration for these events. She also took on the role of hospitality for the officials and tournament staff. As the family involvement expanded, Phyllis became involved in the Washington Cultural Exchange program assisting teams attending orientation camps prior to traveling to foreign countries. She joined her husband on the Washington State Exchange Team to Japan in 1977, the Pacific Northwest Team to Mexico in 1978, and the Washington/California Exchange Team to China in 1984, the first ever wrestling exchange to China. Phyllis' national level involvement began by assisting during the summers working registration at national tournaments in Nebraska and Colorado. She was part of the staff for the 1980 & '81 World Elite Wrestling Championships held in Colorado Springs and the 1983 World Espoir Championships (the pre-Olympic event) in Anaheim, California. She was awarded the National AAU 1983 Organizer of the Year award for her involvement at the national level. In 1988 Phyllis was a key part of the staff as Pacific Lutheran University hosted the 1988 NAIA National Wrestling Championships. In 1990 Phyllis directed the awards presentations at the Goodwill Games held in Seattle. Mat Classic has been the focus of her involvement the past 21 years, as she organizes the Parade of Champions prior to the championship matches and directs the Awards Ceremonies at Mat Classic each year. Her other passion is assisting the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame Banquet ceremonies. She and her husband, Jim, are the only two people who have attended each of the 25 induction ceremonies. Phyllis has become the contact person for the Hall of Fame members. She works closely with them at the Mat Classic awards ceremony, and helps keep them updated through periodic e-mail messages. Phyllis was honored with the Dr. William Tomaras Award by the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association in 1994. Phyllis spent 22 years working at Pacific Lutheran University in the Financial Aid and Student Life Offices. Phyllis and Jim have been married for 42 years and still reside in Puyallup, where they continue to enjoy their family with son Jim, daughter-in-law Dawn and grandchildren Angela (22) and Tyler (18). Phyllis and Jim are currently exploring phased retirement and are trying to spend more time on the road in their motorhome or more time on a cruise to just about anywhere. They continue to assist the Emerald Ridge wrestling program each year where son Jim is the head wrestling coach.
