Chuck Walters
April 30, 1942 - January 08, 2009
Chuck Walters was a Colorado state wrestling champion at 160 pounds as a senior at Topeka High School and was also a member of the 1958 state championship football team.
After serving in the United States Navy from 1961-64, Walters returned to LaJunta, Colorado and entered Otero Junior College. He transferred to Western State College and played football and wrestled. He received his bachelor's degree from Western State and attended graduate school at Adams State College. Walters began his teaching career at Cathedral High School in Denver in 1969 and also coached wrestling, football and baseball. He moved to Jefferson County Schools in 1973 where he taught and coached at Lakewood Junior High School and Jefferson High School. He completed his master's degree at Colorado State University in 1975. Walters and his family moved to Durango in 1984 where he taught and coached at Durango High School and Miller Middle School.
Walters was active for many years in USA Wrestling as a coach and official while also serving as the state cadet director for several years. He was an E-1 mat official and a P-3 pairings official for USA Wrestling. He made "flip disks" for each Colorado state champion as a souvenir of their accomplishment and also started Arvada Kids Wrestling.
He was extremely proud of his students and wrestlers who went on to help with clinics at the state and national level and coached at schools in Colorado and New Mexico. Walters also worked as a scorekeeper at the Colorado state tournament.
Walters was named Teacher of the Year in Jefferson County for industrial arts and was named Coach of the Year in football for both Jefferson County and South Central leagues.
Chuck received his Lifetime Service to Wrestling award posthumously, but knew of his induction before his passing.
