Dave Hopkins
Over a 31 year coaching career Dave Hopkins has demonstrated those qualities of dedication and leadership so necessary to the achievement of success in any endeavor. It was at Richard Montgomery High School that Dave really became acquainted with wrestling under the tutelage of Coach Ed Masood- compiling an enviable record of 107-5 during this four year period. But- this was just the start!
Dave then moved on to Ohio University where he participated in the sport for 4 years. He was a 2× National qualifier, and the team captain in his senior year, compiling an overall record of 73-18.
Upon graduation from Ohio U. in 1977, Dave Hopkins took advantage of an opportunity to become the Head Wrestling Coach at Richard Montgomery High School. Then after a few successful years at his alma mater, Coach Hopkins moved on to Peary High and Rockville High before settling in as coach at Damascus in 1985.
Over the many years that Coach Hopkins has been involved in wrestling, he has served the sport in many capacities- often at a variety of tournaments and clinics. For his many achievements and exemplary efforts, he has, on a number of occasions, been recognized as Coach of the Year.
As attested by his overall record of 315-99-3, Coach Hopkins has been eminently successful in passing his knowledge and experience to many young people. But- with statistics aside- it is for his sincere dedication and leadership that we honor
Coach Hopkins today. Dave Hopkins retired from coaching this year, and is currently an Instructor of Physical Education at Damascus High School. He continues to live in Frederick with his wife Bonnie, where they take pride in their two children- a son and a daughter-both serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the S.S. Wasp and the S.S. Kearsarge respectively.
