Bruce Malinowski, Sr.
In the late 1960's, a seven year old youngster by the name of Bruce Malinowski started wrestling at the Stembridge Recreation program, a member of the Maryland Junior Wrestling League. It made sense; four other brothers were all involved in athletics. The Maryland wrestling community had no idea of the impact that Bruce Malinowski would have on the sport over the next four decades.
As a Junior League wrestler, Bruce would become a State Junior Champ, and as a High Schooler, Bruce placed three times in the MPSSAA State Tournament, becoming a two time State-Champion. Then if was off to the University of Missouri, on full scholarship, under the leadership of Coach Bob Kopnisky. He went on to become a three time Big 8 All Academic Wrestler.
After college, he became assistant Wrestling Coach of the University of Missouri. Bruce's coaching career continued at Mt. St. Joe HS, Parkville HS, and then on to Overlea HS. While at Overlea HS, Bruce's teams won a Baltimore County Tournament Championship, two Regional Championships, and the State Dual Meet Championship in 1999.
As a referee, Bruce has been the Head Official at Multiple State Championships, while serving as a member of the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association since 1990. As a member of the Mason-Dixon Wrestling Officials Association, Bruce has refereed a multitude of Division I and Division III Dual Meets and Tournaments, and has officiated the last two ACC Championships.
In addition, Bruce has also been involved as a major contributor. He served as a clinician at the USNA for eight years, and served as Head Freestyle Coach for the Maryland State Wrestling Association for eight years. During his tenure as a Coach, Bruce has been Tournament Director for 34 different events that include the Counties and Regions.
As an Administrator, Bruce has been Director of Athletics at Overlea HS since 2001, whichalso includes Building Facilitator. He served on the MPSSAA Wrestling Committee for 4Years, along with being the MPSSA wrestling Rules Interpreter since 2004. Bruce Malinowski's career as a competitor, coach, referee, contributor, and administrator was had a lasting positive impact on the Maryland Wrestling Community for the last four decades, with more to come. Bruce Malinowski exemplifies what the Sport of Wrestling stands for!
