William Smith
Despite never wrestling himself or having any children who wrestled, Bill Smith became the consummate wrestling volunteer, devoting over 25 years to the improvement of wrestling on the Virginia Peninsula.
Smith served as president of the Peninsula Wrestling Association five times and was a member of the Board of Directors numerous times. The Peninsula Sports Club Board of Directors presented him with its community service award in 1994.
He was a major contributor in the development of the Virginia Duals wrestling tournament into the first-ever Collegiate National Duals Championship. Regarded as one of the biggest and best experiences for fans, the Virginia Duals grew into the largest dual team tournament in the world with 24 colleges, 48 high schools and four middle school teams.
Smith has served as high school director, tournament director and has chaired multiple committees. He was also instrumental in changing the PWA freestyle team name to Virginia Duals Wrestling Club, capitalizing on the nationally recognized tournament name.
He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame from its inception in 1995 to 2006.
Smith also volunteered his time and services with the Poquoson Athletic Association, including being a member of the Board of Directors, serving numerous terms as president and ultimately being an Honorary Board Member for Life. Through the PAA, he helped raise over $300,000 for Poquoson’s wrestling programs.
During the construction of the PAA’s wrestling building, Smith initiated the creation of a “Wall of Champions” to provide motivation and inspiration for the young wrestlers. His hard work and dedication combined with the support and assistance of others helped make it a reality and Smith maintained and updated it for 18 years.
