Sheldon Thiel

Shelly Thiel Enumclaw Junior High School 1965-1969 Enumclaw High School 1970-1986 Shelly was the wrestling coach at Enumclaw High School for 17 years during which time his record was 211-64-2. As a strong contender at the state meet, Shelly produced three individual State Champions, 7 runner-ups, and 29 place winners. Among the five times when his Hornet team placed in the top ten, they had outstanding performances in 1976 (3rd place) and 1986 (5th place). Thiel was one of the "doer's" in wrestling. He hosted numerous league, district and regional wrestling tournaments. He was very active in the freestyle growth in our state where he hosted numerous tournaments and served as a freestyle official. Shelly was a coach for the 1974 Washington State Cultural Exchange team to Japan and he served on the 1990 Goodwill Games Organizing Committee. Mr. Thiel has continued his contributions to the sport after retiring from coaching in 1986. Shelly has been one of the Tournament Managers for MAT CLASSIC the past 19 years, the Washington State High School Wrestling Championships held annually in the Tacoma Dome on 24 mats. He also serves as the Western Washington Secretary for the State Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Shelly has received numerous honors associated with his wrestling involvement. He was the 1983 and 1986 "AA" Regional Coach of the Year; the 1985 Seamount League Coach of the Year; the 1986 Washington State Wrestling Coach of the Year; 2003 Inducted into the Enumclaw High School Hall of Fame as a coach and administrator and was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1988. He also received the William Tomaras Award for leadership and the promotion of wrestling in Washington in 2003.
