Gary was a novice assistant coach for Eric Beardsley for three years before becomng the head coach at Moses Lake for five years. His record at Moses Lake was 129 wins and 13 losses with three state titles.
He then became the head coach at Grays Harbor College and compiled a 253-47 record in 17 years while winning 11 state junior college titles.
He also served as a wrestling official from 1957-1970.
Coach Frey was a true student of the sport, taking advantage of every opportunity to learn more and be a better coach. Hard work and pride were the focus of his coaching philosophy.
Coach Frey was one of the outstanding leaders in the promotion of the sport of wrestling in Washington State in the 1960s and 1970s. He did everything from coaching, to hosting or being a clinician at wrestling camps and hosting tournaments to provide more opportunities for wrestlers to learn and compete.
During this same time, Gary founded Suplay-Wrestlers World, one of the nation's leading supplies of wrestling products and he continues today as the CEO for Suplay-Wrestlers World. Additionally, he is the Washington state representative for Resilite wrestling mats. Coach Frey has made sure that Suplay-Wrestler's World is always there to assist the wrestling programs in Washington by annually sponsoring the coaches social at the state tournament and the Washington Coaches Association annual conference. Additionally Suplay-Wrestlers World sponsors youth and high school tournaments across the county.
Gary was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987.
Gary passed away on December 21, 2022.
